Addiction: sickness or Learned Behaviour?

These theories evoke much debate. Behavioural conjecture is concerned with the influence of ships company on the person and suggests that it is a behaviour that the person acquires on their journey through life. Therefore, Disease theory is concerned with something upcountry and Behavioural theory is concerned with something external. However, the question I charge asking myself is whether or not addiction can be defined in terms of just one of these theories?

The sickness theory of addiction maintains that addiction is a disease due to the impairment of either behavioural or neurochemical processes, or some combination of the two (Rasssool, 2009). Disease theory must incorporate elements of behavioural theory to be fully understood.
